SA:Coroner critical of surgeon after deaths

ADELAIDE, Aug 5 AAP - A coroner has questioned the competence of a surgeon who operated
on two patients who later died.

Adelaide women Emily Leonard, 77, and Glenys Hillman, 67, died less than a year apart
in 2008 and 2009, both after surgery performed by Oseloka Onuma.

They died from the consequences of an unintended perforation of the bowel caused during
operations to correct a vaginal prolapse.

In his finding into the two deaths, South Australian deputy coroner Anthony Schapel
said he was surprised that such complex surgery could be carried out by doctors whose
qualifications and expertise were based, in large part, on self-teaching and reputation
and not objective assessment.

He said there was very little material to establish Dr Onuma's competence and skill
to safely perform the operations other than the "somewhat self-serving statements" of
the doctor himself.

"The court experiences a measure of disquiet about the manner in which these surgeries
were carried out," Mr Schapel said.

"This sense of unease is compounded by the fact that not only was Mrs Hillman dealt
a significant injury during her surgery, the surgical attempt to rectify that injury failed."

The coroner recommended the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians
and Gynaecologists consider requiring its members to demonstrate that they had the necessary
training, experience and competence to safely perform prolapse surgery.

Spo: Still ticking at 80-years-young

(EDS NOTE - Ted Simmons turns 80 on August 5)

By Nicky Park

SYDNEY, Aug 4 AAP - The mind is like a wind-up wrist watch, you've got to keep turning
it or it will get rusty and seize up, veteran journalist Ted Simmons says.

And at 80-years-young he would know about ticker - as one of the oldest, if not the
oldest, working journalist in Australia.

Not that he notices.

"Well I don't (think about it)," he said.

His career began as a 14-year-old with the now defunct Sydney Daily Mirror in 1943
before he started reading the news for the number one radio station in the country at
the time, 2SM.

But the man who has spent the past 37 years pumping out stories for national news agency,
Australian Associated Press (AAP), says keeping his mind active is one of the keys to
his longevity.

"If you wind up a wrist watch it works," Simmons said.

"If you don't wind up a wrist watch it stops and then it becomes rusty and then you
can't use it anymore.

"So if your mind is used all the time it stays supple, it stays fluid, it keeps working
and while it keeps working you keep living."

Over the course of 65 years in the business, Simmons has seen man land on the moon
and the opening of the Opera House but there is one memory that still takes centre stage.

"A day in 1946 when I'd been working all night ... I walked out of the office about
seven in the morning ... where people were dancing in the streets, strangers were hugging
each other - it was the end of the war."

He still has the last war edition of the newspaper he was working on at the time as
a reminder of the moment.

Simmons says the computer age has changed the atmosphere of the newsroom, making things
easier but sucking out some of the buzz.

"The noise from the typewriters and things like that all added to the atmosphere of
the day and just made it seem interesting and exciting," he said.

"It's become a much quieter place, now it's sanitised.

"The excitement to me is no longer there as it used to be."

Simmons, who was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2006 for services to
sport and journalism, says he has never had a desire to reach the top of his game.

"I never aspired to be the top person. I have become the top person in a number of
areas but that was more through circumstances," he said.

And how.

His services to journalism, including working on AAP's sports desk since 1969, only
scratches the surface of Simmons' involvement in the sporting arena.

He is chairman of the honour committee for the Australian National Hall of Fame for
Soccer, president of four different soccer federations and is in the process of penning
his tenth book on the subject.

And he is showing no sign of slowing down.

"While the body holds out and while the mind holds out I'll keep doing things," he said.

"I will never ever try to become a vegetable.

"If you enjoy what you're doing you can relax."

Fed: Howard supports plebiscites on nuclear power plants

Reissuing, recasting lead par

SYDNEY, Aug 23 AAP - Australians should be able to vote in local plebiscites on whether
nuclear reactors should be sited in their communities, Prime Minister John Howard says.

The announcement comes one day after Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile said locally
binding plebiscites could decide the future of nuclear power in Australia.

While Mr Vaile appeared at odds with the prime minister, Mr Howard today came out in
support of the idea today.

Speaking at the Nepean Rowing Club in Penrith in Sydney's west, Mr Howard told reporters
the nuclear question was at least a decade away.

"When the time does come for plants to be considered in particular parts of Australia,
I believe local communities should be given a vote and I think having a plebiscite in
a local community would be a good demonstration to the rest of the nation," he said.

But last week, Mr Howard told parliament commercial investors, not politicians would
determine the location of nuclear reactors.

"(It is my) opinion that in 10, 15, 20 years time, public opinion will have shifted
on this issue and people will see nuclear power as a very sensible alternative," he said
today.

Qld: Morcombes refuse to give up on Daniel

BRISBANE, Dec 7 AAP - The father of missing teenager Daniel Morcombe says his family
cannot move on until they know the 13-year-old's fate.

Today is the third anniversary of Daniel's disappearance.

He was last seen waiting at a bus stop near his family home in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

Police believe he was abducted and murdered.

In a statement released this morning, Bruce Morcombe said the family would never allow
Daniel's disappearance to become a cold case.

"Try as you may to move on, you cannot because we must find the answers," he said.

"Daniel should have been enjoying schoolies, learning to drive and buying a car like
other kids his age."

Mr Morcombe appealed for those responsible for his son's disappearance to come forward.

"We again appeal to the person responsible, or to those who know something, to do the
right thing, to take some responsibility for your actions and to tell us where we can
find Daniel."

Daniel's mother Denise said it had been painful to watch her son's school mates grow
up and finish high school.

"It has been an excruciating three years watching Daniel's brothers and friends grow
into adults," she said.

"We have been unjustly robbed of our son's teenage years and we will face many more
hurdles in the future."

North Coast Regional Crime Coordinator, Detective Inspector John Maloney said police
would not give up on the case.

He said investigating officers had accumulated a "massive" amount of information and
intelligence on the case.

"I want to make it clear we will not be stopping this investigation and the team working
this case are as determined today as they were three years ago," Det Insp Maloney said.

"Daniel's case has and will continue to be vigilantly investigated. The response from
the public has been unprecedented and that, combined with the tireless work of police,
will help us find those responsible."

How we got into a blog jam

How we got into a blog jam
Byline: Jeannine Guttman
Edition: FINAL
Section: Insight
Column: EDITOR'S NOTE

After reading a new national survey on the burgeoning phenomenon of Web journaling - or blogging - I came away with a different twist on that famous quote, "I think, therefore I am," penned by the French philosopher Rene Descartes.

This study by the Pew Internet & America Life Project was suggesting something similar - only different, more modern.
Something like, "I blog, therefore I am."

That sentiment pretty much sums up the findings of the report, which surveyed more than 4,700 American adult Internet users on their blogging habits.

The word "blog" is a contraction of sorts, a combination of the phrase "Web log." A blog is a diary posted on the Internet, an electronic journal of one's personal experiences, thoughts and feelings.

It is often a highly private and revealing look into a person's world and psyche. And yet, unlike the diary I kept as a teenager, sealed with a tiny lock and buried deep in a dresser drawer, these interior dialogues are published on the Internet, an instantaneous, virtual printing press with a global audience.

Not much privacy there. Which is why 55 percent of all bloggers say they use a fake name.

About 12 million American adults, or 8 percent of all Internet users, keep a blog, the study found. But many more people, the survey found, are reading those blogs - a whopping 57 million American adults, or about 39 percent of Internet users.

So why do people blog, and how many bloggers are there?

Conventional wisdom held that people blogged to get their political beliefs out there, for others to read and be swayed by.

Not so, the survey authors found.

"The Pew Internet Project blogger survey finds that the American blogosphere is dominated by those who use their blogs as personal journals. Most bloggers do not think of what they do as journalism," the authors wrote.

"Most bloggers say they cover a lot of different topics, but when asked to choose one main topic, 37 percent of bloggers cite 'my life and experiences' as a primary topic of their blog. Politics and government ran a very distant second, with 11 percent of bloggers citing those issues of public life as the main subject of their blogs.

"Entertainment-related topics were the next most popular blog- type, with 7 percent of bloggers, followed by sports (6 percent), general news and current events (5 percent), business (5 percent), technology (4 percent), religion, spirituality or faith (2 percent), a specific hobby or a health problem or illness (each comprising 1 percent of bloggers). Other topics mentioned include opinions, volunteering, education, photography, causes and passions, and organizations."

Other findings from the study:

More than half of all bloggers are under the age of 30. They are racially diverse and evenly split in terms of men and women.

When compared to all Internet users, bloggers are much more likely to instant-message; text-message via cell phone; read another's blog; remix songs, text or images; and share artwork, photos, stories and videos online.

Ninety-five percent of bloggers get news from the Internet, versus 73 percent of all Internet users.

But that's not their only source of news. Like other Internet users, bloggers partake of mainstream media - in big doses. Eighty- five percent of both groups read newspapers, with about half doing so on a typical day. About 90 percent watch TV news, with more than half doing so on a typical day. About 75 percent listen to radio news; again, about half do so on a typical day. And about 50 percent read magazines for news, with 25 percent doing so on a typical day.

"Despite the public nature of creating a blog, most bloggers view it as a personal pursuit," the study said. "The main reasons for keeping a blog are creative expression and sharing personal experiences," with a majority saying they have blogs to share stories and express themselves creatively. Eighty-four percent of bloggers "describe their blog as either a 'hobby' or just 'something I do, but not something I spend a lot of time on.' "

Fifty-nine percent of bloggers spend one or two hours per week on their blogs; 10 percent spend 10 hours or more per week working on their blogs.

Fifty-two percent of bloggers "say they blog mostly for themselves, not for an audience. About one-third of bloggers (32 percent) say they blog mostly for their audience."

The study, overall, found that "blogging is inspiring a new group of writers and creators to share their voices with the world. We find that bloggers blog for many different reasons - some blog to exercise their creative muscles, others want to motivate or influence others. . . ." The survey sprang from a need to answer the question "why" - why do people express their innermost thoughts on a the most nonprivate of vehicles, the Internet?

"Some observers have suggested that blogging is nothing more than the next step in a burgeoning culture of narcissism and exhibitionism spurred by reality TV and other elements of the modern media environment," the study notes. "But others contend that blogging promises a democratization of voices that can now bypass the institutional gatekeepers of mainstream media. This democratization is thought to have implications for the practice and business of journalism as well as the future of civic and political discourse."

You can access the full study at www.pewinternet.org.

I don't see the dichotomy of choices in the search for the answer to why people blog. I don't think it's narcissism or democracy. I think it's rooted in something more innate than that, in something that is part of our DNA.

Blogging is the newest iteration of the age-old desire for self- expression and storytelling, which has characterized humans throughout history.

People have an insatiable appetite for storytelling. We love to tell stories, to hear stories and to recall lessons from these tales throughout our lives. Storytelling is the way we document our existence.

It helps us to understand our life, our thoughts, our purpose, our soul. It also enables us to understand the lives of others, to build empathy, compassion and connection.

Remember when you asked your mother or father, "Please tell me a story"?

In profound ways, we are still asking that question, of ourselves and others.

Now, with the Internet, more people can respond to that inquiry. They can write their own stories. They can read others' stories. Their audience can be their friends and family, or the whole planet.

If you strip away the high-tech gadgetry that allows these personal stories to go global, you will find an ancient human desire.

The more things change, I guess, the more they stay the same.

Fed: PM says rosaries/ovaries T-shirt offensive to Catholics

Fed: PM says rosaries/ovaries T-shirt offensive to Catholics

Eds; Reissuing, correcting literal in lead par

CANBERRA, Feb 10 AAP - The rosaries/ovaries T-shirt worn by an Australian Greens senator
was deeply offensive to Catholics, Prime Minister John Howard said today.

Australian Greens Senator Kerry Nettle wore the "keep your rosaries off my ovaries"

T-shirt earlier this week as the Senate started its emotion charged debate over who should
control the abortion drug RU486.

The T-shirt was sponsored by the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA).

Mr Howard today said the message was offensive to Catholics across the country.

"I think that was deeply offensive to many Australian Catholics," he told Southern
Cross Broadcasting.

He said the Greens were sneering at a religious practice and journalists encouraged it.

"The Greens Party can practically sneer at Catholic devotional practice and think it's
funny and to see some journalists standing around grinning as if the whole thing's a joke,"

he said.

But he said Senator Nettle had the right to express herself and it should not be a
criminal offence to make derogatory remarks about a particular religion.

"She has a right to do that - it's a free country," he said.

"It's an expression of free speech and just as I don't believe there should be a law
making it a criminal offence to burn the Australian flag ... I'm not trying to stop Senator
Nettle doing something like that.

"But I'm expressing the view that it's deeply offensive.

"And it's the kind of silly undergraduate contribution to this debate which is regrettable
but that's democracy."

Cowley College student serving country while taking classes

Jenny Sarchet
University Wire
12-27-2004
(The Cowley Press) (U-WIRE) ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Private First Class Erin West spent nine months in Iraq as a combat medic taking care of wounded soldiers under some of the most stressful situations imaginable. During that time she was also taking online classes from Cowley College.

"Taking classes in Iraq wasn't too difficult even with the unreliable Internet and stressful situations, because my teachers were so supportive," West said. "They worked with me so that I would reach success."

West added that being in Iraq was also an opportunity for her to learn. "I experienced a completely different culture and its people," she said. "Even though it was a war zone, I walked away with a greater sense of pride and people."

West left for Fort Leonardwood for basic training in February of 2003. Then she went to basic training at Fort Sam Houston. After she completed all the training, she was stationed at Fort Bliss in the 31st Combat Support Hospital. West was deployed to Iraq on Jan. 7 and returned on Sept. 29.

West is a graduate of Mulvane High School, where she graduated in May of 2001.

"I didn't always want to go into the Army," West said. "I just reached a point where the Army was the best choice for me to make at the time."

After deciding the Army was her best choice, West contacted the Distance Education Center at Cowley College.

"In Iraq I absolutely loved my job. The conditions weren't great and it was stressful, but I loved taking care of people," West said. "The feelings it gave me made me want to keep on with my education so that I could get my degree and be able to do more in nursing."

While in Iraq she was stationed at Camp Anaconda. It is a large base approximately 50 miles north of Baghdad. She worked there at a field hospital that operated and took care of American soldiers, detainees, Iraqi civilians, and coalition forces. During her service there, her group provided nursing care to over 1,000 patients.

West will graduate this December with an associate's degree. She is now stationed at Fort Bliss. She would like to continue on with a nursing program at the University of Texas in El Paso this spring or next fall.

The big day

The Rahm Inaugural . . .

It's open to the public. It's not fancy. It's minus ball gowns. And Vice President Joe Biden is coming.

† The upshot: "He thought it was cool," said a top Rahm Emanuel source, "so the vice president, who is a real down-to-earth kind of guy, wanted to come to Rahm's Inaugural festivities Monday."

† The backshot: Extra security precautions being taken for the inauguration, akin to Secret Service security, had caused speculation President Obama was planning to show up at Millennium Park's Pritzker Pavilion for the swearing-in ceremony.

† Also in attendance: Emanuel's parents, his brothers, Zeke and Ari, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. Whoopee!

The FBI story . . .

Hmmm. Did U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald nix a nod to become head of the FBI — or was he not offered the job?

"No comment," said Randall Samborn, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office.

† The big question: Did the Obama administration feel Fitzgerald was too hot to handle? Did they steer clear of Fitzgerald, who has built a reputation for being one tough fed, because of the ongoing Gov. Rod Blago corruption trial, which Fitzgerald worked on — in which phone calls made by President Obama's former White House chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, have surfaced?

† Another view: According to NBC reporter Michael Isikoff, the decision by the Obama administration to extend FBI director Robert Mueller's contract, which was just announced, was due to lack of interest in the job by the administration's top picks.

† The Fitzgerald question: Isikoff also contends it was unclear whether Fitzgerald was seriously eyed because he may have been considered a wild card. And his role in the prosecution of Scooter Libby, onetime chief of staff to former veep Dick Cheney, might have rallied Republicans against Fitzgerald's appointment.

Hat chat . . .

The goofball hat worn by Princess Beatrice at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middelton, which became an international fashion error sensation, will be going on eBay for charity. The hat fueled so much Internet chat, it was given its own Facebook page. Now if Beatrice could only get rid of the Panda eye makeup, we could all get some sleep.

This & that . . .

In case you missed it, actress Angelina Jolie, the mother of six, has a new arm tattoo — which has been described as depicting the longitude and latitude of Brad Pitt's birthplace in Oklahoma. Be still my tongue.

I spy . . .

St. Louis Cardinal baseball players Albert Pujols, Ryan Theriot, Jaime Garcia, Jon Jay, Colby Rasmus, Allen Craig and Daniel Descalso at Gibsons on Monday. "Wow! We could have had a baseball game there if a few Cubs were in the house," said a restaurant source. Atlanta Hawk Al Horford also was at the eatery Monday.

It's payback time . . .

It almost never happens.

But a blue moon shone recently when Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart opened a certified letter and found a check for $6,000 inside.

† Translation: 'Twas compensation from a southwest suburban man who barricaded himself in a local business for several hours — spurring a costly response from the Hostage Barricade and Terrorism Unit.

† The endshot: After the man was convicted, Judge John "Jack" Hynes took the rare step of ordering him to compensate the county for its expenses — and he did!

Sneedlings . . .

Today's birthdays: Darius Rucker, 45; Dennis Rodman, 50; Harvey Keitel, 72; Stevie Wonder, 61; Robert Pattinson, 25, and Stephen Colbert, 47 . . . Saturday's birthdays: Jim Tansey, 70; Mark Zuckerberg, 27; Dan Auerbach, 32; Cate Blanchett, 42; David Byrne, 59; Robert Zemeckis, 59; George Lucas, 67; Monsignor Kenneth Velo, 64, and Boni Fine, ageless.

Barrington gets to work on new technology plan.(News)

Byline: Michelle Martin Daily Herald Staff Writer

The technology plan for Barrington area schools might have been bogged down for the past several years, but it will leap forward this spring, Barrington Unit District 220's administrators said.

A committee of staff, parents, community members and students will meet today in District 220 to continue developing a technology framework plan that the district can submit to the state by April 16, said technology coordinator Robert Luby.

The plan will cover the next three to five years, but no one should expect it to detail exactly what students will be doing on what kind of computers in 2004, Luby said.

Instead, the plan will give the district a direction to move in and set up a structure to help it get there.

"The plan says, here's the structure," Luby said. "The structure is going to do the work."

The district must complete its plan in the next several weeks to meet the deadline for a $300,000 technology grant from the state. The plan also must take the form prescribed by the state, Luby said.

When board member Thomas Tonniges heard that the only community representatives on the committee board were board member Thomas Krettler and one other parent, he asked whether the district should take more advantage of the expertise of some Barrington area residents.

"It seems to me you can't have community ideas unless you have lots of community members here," Tonniges said.

But having too much input could overwhelm the committee as it works to write a plan that will meet the state requirements, Luby said.

"To get 50 experts together to work on this plan, that's too much information all at once," Luby said. "This plan can include going out and pursuing those resources."

One of the first steps the committee is taking is collecting data about existing technology in the schools through a survey available on the Internet and on the internal districtwide network.

BURLINGAME, Calif., March 1 /PRNewswire/ --

Pacific Gateway Exchange, Inc. (Nasdaq: PGEX) today announced its fourth quarter revenue was $154 million, a 22% increase over the same quarter last year. Gross profit increased to $24.8 million, a 26% increase from the fourth quarter a year ago. Annual revenue increased 30% to $604.6 million from $466.3 million in 1998. Annual gross profit increased to $87.3 million, a 20% increase from 1998. Recurring Adjusted EBITDA decreased to $7.1 million from $9.3 million in the fourth quarter last year, reflecting the Company's fourth quarter investment of $7.9 million in Onyx, the Company's Internet subsidiary. Recurring Adjusted EBITDA for fiscal 1999 increased to $36.5 million from $35.9 million in 1998.

"We are delighted with the financial results for 1999," said Mr. Howard A. Neckowitz, President and CEO of Pacific Gateway. "The stage is now set for major expansion in our Internet and retail operations which are important components of our long term business plan."

Onyx Networks, the Company's Internet subsidiary, earned revenue in the fourth quarter of $0.5 million, with a gross margin of 70%. Pacific Gateway invested $7.5 million of its fourth quarter recurring Adjusted EBITDA in developing its Internet and data network services. The Company expects to increase its expenditures for this line of business through 2000. The Company's Internet strategy is to target global companies and network resellers, including content and Internet delivery. Onyx offers Internet access and collocation and expects to add more advanced global services, including VPN, content and application service, to its portfolio. The Company continues to achieve its internal goals in developing its global Internet Network with six U.S. cities, Tokyo, and London on-line today. "We have achieved remarkable growth in our global Internet operations in the latter part of 1999," said Mr. Neckowitz. "With services already being offered in three countries, expanding to five countries in the next 6 months, we are set to be a major player in the global Internet market."

The Company's investment in state-of-the-art global cable networks provides for profitable bandwidth sales and assures low-cost capacity for its operations. Total committed bandwidth sales represent over 50% of the Company's investment in the Japan-U.S. and TAT-14 cable networks.

The Company is rapidly expanding its retail operations through acquisitions and internal growth. Retail voice revenue increased 29% to $19.8 million this quarter from $15.3 million in the third quarter. The Company's retail subsidiary, IECom, provides retail services to over 300,000 international and domestic customers. The Company's retail variable gross margin for the fourth quarter was 59% compared to 54% last quarter and 57% for the fourth quarter last year. Retail contributed 41% of the Company's variable gross margin from voice compared to 33% in the third quarter and 14% in the fourth quarter last year. Pacific Gateway has completed several retail acquisitions, which contributed significantly to earnings. Most notably, the Company is acquiring the international division of NOS Communications, Inc. (NOS) for $40 million in cash and stock. The addition will enhance billing and customer service platforms and greatly contribute to the Company's revenue and earnings growth in 2000. In addition, IECom is conducting market trials with packaged Internet Consumer Services (ICS) including Internet access bundled with Intelligent CPE, unified messaging and local and long distance services.

The Company's U.S. and offshore wholesale voice revenue decreased by 11% to $134.0 million in the fourth quarter from $148.2 million in the third quarter. Wholesale variable gross margins were 13% for the quarter. The Company primarily carries wholesale traffic to maintain its low cost structure for its retail operations. The Company expects to expand its customer base and decrease its costs by utilizing VoIP technology as PC-phone usage increases. Pacific Gateway today has one of the largest VoIP networks with over 40 global points. The Company is focusing on VoIP as a core area of growth as customers continue to demand termination at the lowest cost and the technology quickly reaching the quality level that customers expect. "Our wholesale base continues to provide us with a vehicle to grow our value creating Internet and retail operations," added Mr. Neckowitz. "With our network investment complete to support our wholesale revenue stream and with around $60 million invested today achieving 2%-3% EBITDA margins, we still achieve a 12%-15% return on capital."

AIG Trading Group Inc. Forms AIG Telecommunications LLC, A Central Marketplace for Trading Forward Contracts On Minutes and Bandwidth.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 9, 1999--

AIG Trading Group Inc., a member company of American International Group, Inc. (AIG), has formed AIG Telecommunications LLC (AIGT). The new organization will operate a central marketplace for wholesale telecommunications network capacity, creating the world's first forward delivery market for telecommunications minutes and bandwidth.

AIGT was established to address the need for an efficient mechanism for commercial carriers and resellers to trade and deliver telecommunications network capacity, a need created by the growing deregulation and increased competition in the international telecommunications marketplace, coupled with the vigorous demand for, and uneven availability of, bandwidth.

AIGT will facilitate the trading and delivery of telecommunications network capacity by providing access to a worldwide series of nodes to interconnect the various telecommunications networks. AIGT will act as an intermediary to all transactions, by providing credit support to counterparts and allowing bandwidth and telephone minutes to be bought and sold anonymously as a "commodity." All participants will receive market information in real time over a secure Internet link.

To promote market liquidity, all trades are based on units of network capacity called Standard Telecommunications Units (STUs). The STU defines a measure of connection time or bandwidth that conforms to defined standards of circuit quality and other relevant performance criteria. Physical fulfillment of a trade can take place as long as one year into the future.

"By establishing an economic and telephonic infrastructure beneficial to the wholesale telecommunications marketplace, we plan to revolutionize the way bandwidth and `minutes' are bought and sold today," says Dr. Eric L. Raab, Managing Director of AIGT. "We expect participants to gain material financial advantage as they utilize our efficient pricing, provisioning, and settlement systems. AIG Trading Group Inc. has spearheaded the development of markets in other commodities such as electricity and natural gas, and their experience has been instrumental in making telecom trading a reality."

AIG Trading Group Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in market making and trading activities in foreign exchange, interest rates, base and precious metals. It provides risk management services to multinational corporations, financial institutions, commercial producers and users, institutional investors and sovereign entities.

For further information on AIGT, please contact Eric L. Raab at 203/861-6050 or eraab@aigtc.com.

This description of AIG Telecommunications LLC and its business is for information only, and is not an offer to enter into any transaction. AIG Telecommunications LLC does not act as a fiduciary of financial, investment or commodity trading advisor for its counterparts, each of which is responsible for its own investment, hedging and trading decisions.

AIG is the leading U.S.-based international insurance organization and the largest underwriter of commercial and industrial insurance in the United States. Its member companies write property, casualty, marine, life and financial lines insurance in approximately 130 countries and jurisdictions, and are engaged in a range of financial services and investment management businesses. American International Group, Inc.'s common stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, as well as the stock exchanges in London, Paris, Switzerland and Tokyo.
